Raymond Davis case is Sub-Judice

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday stressed upon the need for the United States’ support to Pakistan in pleading its case for assistance and market access before the international community.

“We need preferential market access to support our economy from the dire impacts of ongoing struggle against militancy, on one hand, and to rehabilitate and reconstruct damaged infrastructure due to devastating floods, on the other,” he added.

The President expressed these views in a meeting with a US congressional delegation, which called on him here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Monday.

The delegation included Representatives Darell El Issa, Todd R. Platts, Jason Chaffetz, Stephen F. Lynch, Brian M. Higgins and Raul L. Labrador.

Stephen Engelken, Charge d’ Affairs, Thomas A. Alexander, Senior Counsel (Majority) Committee on Oversight, Adam Pl. Fromm, Counsel (Majority) Director of Member Services and Scott Lindsay, Counsel (Majority) Committee on Oversight were also present.

Pakistan side included Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Finance Minister, M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President, Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor, Chairman National Commission for Government Reforms, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs, Senator Syeda Sughra Imam, Ms. Farahnaz Ispahani and Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar besides Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and other senior officials.

Briefing media Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said that matters relating to Pak-US bilateral relations, mutual cooperation, fight against militancy, Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) and security situation in the region among other related issues were discussed during the meeting.

Babar said that the President highlighted economic situation of the country during the meeting and focused upon the need for US support to Pakistan in pleading its case for assistance and market access before the international community.

“Ours is a war ravaged and flood stricken economy, and our people need priority attention and assistance to overcome financial difficulties,” Farhatullah Babar quoted the President as saying.

“Our priority is trade not aid”, the President emphasized.
The President urged the visiting delegation to use their influence to secure market access and trade for the country.

Discussing Pakistan-US relations, the President said that a long-term and stable equation marked by close collaboration and multidimensional cooperation between the two countries guarantees not only development of the country but also peace and stability of the region.

He expressed satisfaction on the progress being made through the channel of Pak-US strategic dialogue on various sectoral levels.

The members of congressional delegation appreciated the country’s struggle against militancy and assured US continued support in this regard to the people and the Government of Pakistan.

The President reiterated his call for expediting passage of ROZs (Reconstruction Opportunity Zones) legislation to create economic opportunities for the people who are worst hit due to scourge of militancy.

Discussing regional situation, the President reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance that it has an abiding interest in a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan and it firmly believes in neutrality and non-interference in internal affairs of the country.

Pakistan, the President said, would continue to support all efforts for promoting sustainable peace, stability and development in Afghanistan.

He said “we firmly believe that political approach seconded by economic development was equally important for bringing stability to the war tarnished country”.

He said that Pakistan would support all efforts for the capacity building of the institutions in Afghanistan.

The Congressmen also raised the matter of Mr. Raymond Davis, involved in the killing of Pakistani nationals in Lahore, with the President.

The President said that he appreciated their concern but the matter was already before the courts. It would be prudent to wait for the legal course to be completed, he said.

The delegation assured the President said that US administration would continue to provide all possible help to the Government in overcoming its difficulties.

The powerful blast brought down the whole building of Central Investigation Department (CID) located in the most sensitive area in the central area of the metropolis.

A powerful shock wave released by the blast also shattered windowpanes of a number of surrounding buildings.

Banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility of the attack.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Saturday and deliberated on matters relating to the forthcoming Pak-US strategic dialogue.

Briefing the media, Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting was held to deliberate upon the forthcoming Pak-US strategic dialogue that is scheduled to be held in Washington soon.

Babar said the democratic government wanted to pursue multi-faceted comprehensive cooperation between the two countries while at the same time address issues like access to drone technology, reimbursement of coalition support fund arrears and RoZ legislation.

He said that the challenges being faced by the two countries vis-à-vis the security situation and promotion of intelligence sharing mechanism and the capacity enhancement of the security forces would also come under discussion during the strategic dialogue.

The president has all along maintained that Pakistan had suffered a colossal loss, both in human and material losses due to the ongoing fight against militancy and the recent devastating floods which further added to the economic woes.

The president said the situation calls for the help of the international community especially the US to support Pakistan and advocate its case for having greater access to its products in the international markets.

The president said that he had been urging US visitors to use their influence in expediting ROZs legislation and for helping Pakistan in creating new vistas of opportunities for the flood-affected people.

He expressed hope that discussions during the forthcoming dialogue would be productive and help carry forward the progress made so far in the mutually agreed areas of cooperation in which Pakistan needs more help from the United States.

It may be recalled that various areas of mutual cooperation that included: security, defence, socio-economic projects, enhancement of power generation capacity and infrastructure were thoroughly deliberated during the sectoral meetings in the last round of the dialogue.

Defence Minister Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar and Finance Minister Dr.Abdul Hafeez Sheikh were also present during the meeting besides Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and Finance Secretary Salman Siddique.

Lahore Triple Blasts leave 18 dead, 157 injured

LAHORE: Eighteen people were killed and at least 157 others injured, some of them critically, in three blasts that ripped through a procession on the occasion of Yaum-e-Ali in Lahore on Wednesday.

DCO Lahore confirmed 18 people’s death while at least 157 , including women and children were shifted to hospitals. Twenty-five to 30 of the injured are said to be in serious condition.

A police constable was also killed in the blasts, CCPO Lahore said.

A banned organization Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Almi claimed responsibility of the deadly blasts.

The first blast that occurred in the middle of the procession at Karbala Gaame Shah was followed within minutes by two high intensity suicide blasts at Bhaati Chowk, police sources confirmed.

Commissioner Lahore said that the second and third blasts were suicidal and that a head of one of the suicide bombers has been recovered.

Relief and rescue efforts kick started after blasts and dozens of injured, including women and children were shifted to different medical facilities including Meo Hospital.

Later, the participants of the procession and enraged people pelted police vehicles with stones and damaged public property. A TV footage showed a motor cycle and furniture burning with rising flames.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the blasts and ordered the concerned authorities to carry out investigation.

FC Chief, 4 personnel killed in Peshawar suicide attack

PESHAWAR: A suicide bomber killed Commandant Frontier Constabulary Siffwat Ghayur and at least four FC personnel in Peshawar’s Saddar area on Wednesday, Geo News reported.

According to sources the suicide bomber hit the vehicle of FC Commandant when he was leaving the office for home.

FC Cantonment, confirming the death of Siffwat Ghayur, said that four guards accompanying him were also killed in the attack.

The powerful blast injured 9 people including 3 policemen who have been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital.

The suicide bomber’s head has been found off Deens Center, usually a crowded commercial area where the blast occurred. Other vehicles present around the FC Chief’s were also damaged.

Gunshots were also heard immediately after the blast.

Heavy contingents of police and FC personnel reached the blast site and sealed the area for collecting evidence.

Siffwat Ghayur, considered to be an honest and valiant police officer, served as CCPO Peshawar before assuming the office of FC Commandant. The deceased, who also remained a Commandant of Police Academy for three years, played a significant role in maintenance of peace in Peshawar.

Senior Provincial Minister Bashir Bilour also reached the blast site and told the reporters that the blast was a suicide attack. He said the suicide bomber was in a taxi that struck the FC vehicle.

He said the terrorists are going berserk because they have failed to achieve their goals.

There is this Facebook page that is holding a so-called contest for Prophet Mohammad’s drawings (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa-aal-hi-Wasallam).

Despite thousands of complaints, Facebook administration is not banning the page; unlike they usually do even for very minor violation of Facebook Terms of Services.

This page is clearly violating the terms, by spreading hatred and disrespecting Muslims and their values.

We have seen riots and protests in past when western media published such drawings. “Freedom of Speech” what they call it is no explanation, particularly when they know that their such deeds harm Islamic beliefs.

These campaigns are clearly more like a tease than of “Freedom of Speech”, and an obvious demo of mocking a religion, which for sure is not allowed by any religion of the world.

An SMS campaign in Pakistan is on the rise to boycott Facebook, at least on May 20th, 2010 to protest against this act of Facebook for not banning the page till now.

Recently, Facebook has been very strict for Fan Pages about Islam. Just this week we saw many Fan Pages getting banned from Facebook due to their relation with Islamic content.

TTP claim Lahore bombings – 39 dead

LAHORE: At least 39 people were killed and 95 others wounded on Friday after two suicide bombers struck the vehicles of Garrison Security Force near R A Bazaar in Lahore.

The heads of both alleged bombers were recovered from the scene of the blasts while two suspects were also arrested, the Inspector General of Punjab Tariq Salim Dogar told reporters after the blasts.

The IGP also confirmed the death toll.

Meanwhile, the proscribed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed the responsibility for twin Lahore bombings.

The blasts took place at 12:48 pm within the space of 15 seconds at R A Bazar as crowds gathered for Friday prayers. The blasts were so powerful that it caused cracks in nearby buildings besides shattering window panes.

“We have collected concrete technical evidence, which will help identify the attackers. Both the attackers were on foot,” the IGP said.

Five security men were dead and 15 others were wounded in the bombings, sources cloe to security agencies said.

Rescue workers and paramedics rushed to the R A Bazaar, a densely populated area of the city.

The area was crowded as the blasts occurred shortly before the main Friday prayers were to start. Emergency was immediately declared in city hospitals, where dead and injured were shifted.

Lahore attack, 9 victims laid to rest

LAHORE: Nine of the 13 victims, who died in today’s car bomb blast in Lahore, were laid to rest on Monday night.

The funeral prayers of eight victims, including six policemen, were offered at Police Line. On this occasion, IG Punjab Tarim Salim Dogar said an inquiry team has been formed to probe the terror attack.

Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into a building where police interrogate high-profile suspects in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore, killing at least 13 people and wounding 61 others, including women, officials said.

The attack shattered what had been a relative lull in major violence in Pakistan.

The attack also showed that rebels retain the ability to strike the country’s heartland, far from the Afghan border regions where al Qaida and the Taliban have long thrived, despite army offensives aimed at wiping them out.

The authorities have found the head of the suicide bomber.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion fell on the Pakistani Taliban and allied militant groups.

Those groups are believed to have been responsible for a wave of attacks which killed more than 600 people starting in October, including several in major Pakistani cities. More recent attacks have been smaller and confined to remote north-west regions near Afghanistan.

The latest explosion comes amid reports of a Pakistani crackdown on Afghan Taliban and al Qaida operatives using its soil. Among the militants said to have been arrested is the Afghan Taliban’s number two commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

The bomb went off outside a Punjab province police building, police official Zulfikar Hameed said. TV footage showed a huge crater in the ground where the blast seemed to have originated.

DCO Lahore said that 800 kilograms of explosive material was used in the attack.

Police official Chaudhry Shafiq said 13 people had died. Of the 61 people wounded, several were in a critical condition.

Hospital official Jawed Akram said the dead included at least one woman and a young girl, apparently part of a group heading to a school. Several women were among the wounded.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik painted the attack as sign of desperation from militants whose “backs have been broken” by the army. “They are taking guerrilla actions but gradually it is decreasing and they are being arrested and in the coming days they will have no chance,” he said.

Several casualties feared in Karachi blast

KARACHI: At least 11 people were killed and over 50 other people were injured when a powerful explosion occurred in a public vehicle plying on Sharah-e-Faisal of Karachi, media reported Friday.

According to Geo News, the blast occurred in a mini bus near Nursery stop towards FTC. The injured riding a mini bus coming from Malir, include children and women.

Police and other rescue workers have arrived on the spot. The road leading to Saddar has been blocked and the blast site has been cordoned off.

According to Geo News correspondent, the blast occurred near a furniture market situated near the Sharah-e-Faisal.

The Geo News correspondent said at least 50 people were injured in the blast, who have been shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Various injured are in critical state. Also a body has been moved from the scene.

All the casualties have been moved from the blast scene.

According to eyewitnesses, a motorcyclist hit the ill-fated vehicle to cause the mishap. The bus was completely damaged in the blast.

The Jinnah Hospital sources confirmed to Geo News of at least 11 deaths.

After the blast, people gathered to protest and raised slogans. People in large number gathered at Jinnah Hospital as well.
