RAWALPINDI: Saab-2000 Awacs aircraft meant for aerial surveillance has been incorporated in the Pakistan Air Force fleet, Geo News reported Tuesday.

A ceremony in this connection was held PAF Kamra attended by Chief of Air Staff Rao Qamar Suleman as chief guest.

Addressing on the occasion, the PAF chief said Saab-2000 will enhance PAF capacity to combat the threats facing the country.

With this acquisition from Sweden, Pakistan on Tuesday became the second country in the region after India to have inducted the sophisticated surveillance aircraft in its air force.

The aircraft is fitted with the latest technology to detect aircraft flying at high and medium altitudes. With state-of-the-art system, it is also capable of detecting objects flying at lower levels over land and sea at extended ranges. The system is also capable of detecting surface targets over sea.

The Erieye system provides 300 degree coverage and has an effective detection range of only 300 km to 350 km. It uses a pulse Doppler radar with a fixed, wedge-shaped antenna.

“By virtue of these features, Pakistan Air Force would be able to boost its operational capability manifold by achieving requisite early warning for efficient and meaningful air defence of its airspace,” an official statement said.

As compared to Pakistan’s AWAC system, the Indian Phalcon system provides tactical surveillance of airborne and surface targets and helps gather signal intelligence. It is also capable of tracking fighter planes, missiles and ground forces from a distance of 400 kilometres and in all weather conditions.

Qamar said four-aircraft deal for Saab-2000 worth $866 million have been signed.

The PAF Chief said the PAF will receive 18 F-16 aircrafts next year.

Historic decision of Supreme Court

Posted on 24 December 2009 by PakBee - Total hits: 3,723

The landmark verdict of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has totally changed the political scenario of the country, giving way to discussions and debates by people belonging to various schools of thought and opinion. These discussions do not seem to be ending any time soon.

The full court of SC, through its verdict reflecting the wishes of the people, has given a message to the world that the judiciary of Pakistan is independent. For the first time a decision has received such widespread applause. The people are supporting the verdict in almost every forum and every section of the society.

The politicians are vowing not to let the process of democracy derail while the people are showing all out favour for the accountability of corrupt politicians and rulers. They want the plundered money of the country to be brought back.

But it is difficult for the people to digest when all the accused claim that their hands clean. The prices have sky rocketed while unemployment and poverty have increased even further yet these problems go unnoticed and unattended on the part of the people holding reigns of power.

Everyone is in favour of a transparent administration and a clean society. Everyone wants that any kind of confrontation between the institutions must be avoided in the larger interest of the country.

Are the country institutions heading toward any kind of confrontation?

Will the Supreme Court’s verdict pave the path for transparent accountability?

Please, share your views with us.

RAWALPINDI: The PPP Punjab President Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan and senior provincial minister Raja Riaz Ahmad Khan have declared that enough is enough and from now on, the party would adopt the course of confrontation instead of the traditional conciliatory policy so far adopted.

They said Kamran Khan, Shaheen Sehbai, Ansar Abbasi and Dr Shahid Masood should not become movers and shakers in politics. The hands of those who are attempting to demolish the government would be amputated.

They were talking at the PPP provincial secretariat in Lahore on Monday after presiding over the meeting of the party’s executive council, federal council, district presidents and general secretaries. They said right from the beginning our politics had been based on ideology.

They warned that those targeting the Aiwan-e-Sadr and residing in palaces built of glass would not be spared. They said the PPP had offered tremendous sacrifices for democracy and the country’s security. Now that we are in power it is because of the leadership of Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari.

Raja Riaz said power to the PPP had not come through charity but because of a heavy mandate given by the people. Criticizing Geo TV channel, he warned Kamran Khan and Dr. Shahid Masood to avoid becoming champions of politics. The hands of those who tried to dismantle the democratic government will be amputated.

Expressing complete confidence in the party leadership Raja Riaz said the PPP is facing a media trial but everyone must know that the party and Pakistan are inseparable.

PPP leaders also criticised Shaheen Sehbai, Group Editor of The News, and Ansar Abbasi, Editor Investigations of The News for their writings. It was alleged that Ansar Abbasi writes an elegy every day.

Earlier while addressing the meeting, PPP Punjab General Secretary Samiullah Khan said the party of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed would not be run according to “Terey, Merey Mutabiq” but the aspirations of the people. Lambasting Geo television channel, he said out of the 841 NRO beneficiaries only one man and the Swiss case was being singled out. Samiullah said the PPP would resist if the judiciary oversteps its constitutional mandate.

The PPP Punjab President Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan warned each and every organisation to confine their activities within the given parameters. He said we are not afraid of jails or police stations as we consider them as medals. Rana Aftab lambasted the intriguers and others who had launched criticism of the party leadership and said henceforth they will be confronted with full force
